The list of benefits from roses is seemingly endless. A simple Google search yields hundreds of beauty and health uses for roses. Personally, I have a couple rose bushes in my backyard that pump out flowers each year and I am continually finding new ways to harvest and use these blooms (outside of just enjoying their beauty!). Last year, I perfected Rose Petal Jam, and this year I wanted to give Rose Water a try.. and I am here to tell you.. Rose Water is easy to make and even easier to use!

To make rose water, all you need are fresh rose petals (free from any pesticides), distilled water and a way to boil. This recipe takes only 30 minutes to make and can be stored in your fridge for weeks, so you have no reason but to give it a try!

If you need to be further convinced here is a quick list of uses in which you can utilize your easy to make rose water.

4 Ways to Use Rose Water

  1. Rose Water makes a great toner. Spray it on your skin and face to reduce redness and sunburn. Rose petals are anti-microbial so it also helps prevent and get rid of acne! There are studies that even show rose water can help heal cuts and burns because of it’s anti-bacterial properties.

  2. Rose Water smells great, so spray it on everything! From adding a bit to the laundry or spraying it on your pillow before bed, the fresh scent will be sure to make you smile. I have also enjoyed adding it to a bath for a refreshing scent and my skin will smell great for hours.

  3. Drink it! Rose Water is packed with antioxidants and is delicious in crafty cocktails or heat it up with some honey and sip on it (some say it can soothe a sore throat).

  4. Cook with it! Many middle-eastern recipes call for Rose Water, but you can add it to simple recipes too. Think tasty desserts like adding it to a frosting or homemade ice cream recipe.

How to Make Rose Water at Home

Ingredients:

  • rose petals (removed from the stem and gently washed)

  • distilled water* (enough to cover the rose petals)

Directions:

  1. Add petals to a large pot and top off with distilled water. *Note, you want just enough to barely cover the petals.. too much and you will get a diluted product.

  2. Over medium heat, bring the roses and water to a simmer and cover to prevent evaporation.

  3. Continue to simmer for 20 minutes. You will notice the petals will lose their color and turn a pale pink.

  4. Using a strainer with a jar or bowl underneath, strain the rose water to separate the petals from the liquid. Discard the petals (or compost them!).

  5. Store your completed Rose Water in a glass jar or spray bottle and keep refrigerated. I like these 4oz fine mist sprayers for beauty use.

*Distilled water is the recommended type of water because it is free of impurities like chlorine and bacteria

Rose water will stay good in the refrigerate for up to 8 weeks. Discontinue use if discoloration occurs or it begins to smell.
